Raymond Buckland (b. 1934), according to his written works, was the first person in the United States to openly admit to being a practitioner of Wicca. In 1963 Buckland had his first and only meeting with Gerald Gardner and was initiated into Gardnerian Wicca which he introduced to the United States in 1964. Though he began as a supporter of Gardnerian Wicca, he later formed his own tradition dubbed Seax-Wica. Buckland has appeared as a speaker at many Neo-Pagan and multi-cultural events including the first Starwood Festival in 1981.

Buckland was born in London on 31 August 1934. He is of Roma descent. He was raised in the Anglican Church and developed an interest in spiritualism and the occult at about age 12.

He was educated at King's College in London and later Brantridge Forest College in Sussex. He earned a doctorate in anthropology at Brantridge. From 1957 to 1959, he served in the Royal Air Force. He and wife Rosemary immigrated to the United States in 1962, and moved to Long Island, NY. Buckland currently lives on a farm in Wooster, Ohio, where he continues to write.
