On December 9, 1930, 1 Broadcasting Caracas (1BC) became the first permanent radio station in Venezuela when it was founded by William H. Phelps, owner of the Almacen Americano, a business specialising in the importation and sales of electronic artifacts. Phelps' immediate colaborators were businessmen Edgar J. Anzola and Ricardo Espina. One of the original celebrities of 1BC included Graciela Naranjo, who made her professional debut here when she was only age 15. In 1935, 1 Broadcasting Caracas changed its name to Radio Caracas and by World War II it was one of the best sources of news and information in Venezuela. Alfredo Sadel, a famous Venezuelan entertainer debuted on Radio Caracas in the year 1946, where he recorded his first song, Desesperacion. Unfortunately, the recording never aired but he would end up hosting popular radio shows such as Caravana Camel, an evening radio program where he made his claim to fame. Renny Ottolina also began his career on Radio Caracas a year earlier, in 1945. In the 1960s, Radio Caracas became known as Radio Caracas Radio (RCR) so that wouldn't be confused with their television counterpart, Radio Caracas Television, which was founded on November 15, 1953. RCR can be heard today at 750 AM and its programming mostly consists of news and sports. Javier Perera is currently RCR's manager of information and one of the presenters of the news program Informe RCR. Expediente, conducted by Francisco Olivares, won the 2005 Monseñor Pellín Award for best national radio program.
