The Prime Minister is the Chadian head of government.

The position of Prime Minister was first used in Chad during the military rule of Félix Malloum, who gained power in 1975. The Prime Minister at the time was influential and even had control of elements of the military. Prime Minister Hissène Habré used that military control to challenge Malloum, eventually resulting in an agreement whereupon both resigned in 1979. This cease-fire fell apart quickly, and Chad was torn by civil war. The position was vacant until President Idriss Déby appointed Jean Alingue Bawoyeu to the post in 1991 after Déby overthrew Habré and seized control.
