Popular girl
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The popular girl is a stock character in many fiction. She is usually a young girl who is pretty, and well known. She is sometimes the daughter of a prominent member of the community, such as a principal, pastor, businessperson or government official and is almost always financially privileged as a result.
A popular girl can also focus herself on personal appearance, shopping, fashion, and other exterior things, usually admiring her self-proclaimed beauty by flipping her hair, primping her hair, or admiring herself with a mirror. Many popular teenage girls in fiction rarely are bookworms, and sometimes get poor or average grades as a result; however, some other popular girls show hidden intellect underneath the fancy exterior. Most popular teenage girls in fiction are also cheerleaders or majorettes or whatever activities that gathered attention. She is also usually either American, Canadian, British, or French.
In negative potraying of a popular girl, she is often a snob, she may criticize and demean others, or ignore them altogether. A pleasant facade may hide an underlying cruelty. The more intelligent she is, the crueler, nastier, and more hidden her actions are. She may also be considered an antagonist despite not being the primary villain.
Note that there is a similar, but less common stereotype of male popular kids. These boys usually have girls dreaming of them, and think lowly of the uncool kids like nerds.
Negative potraying of a popular girl in fiction might have been the creation of unpopular females. Females are more well known to be spiteful toward other females who are prettier, more popular, and so on. While males tend to be dismissive to other males who excel them at some area, which might have explained the lack of popular boys.
