Elizabeth Pitcairn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elizabeth Pitcairn, born December 5, 1973 into a musical Bryn Athyn, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania family, began the violin at age three and performed her first concerto with orchestra at 14. She studied violin in Los Angeles with Robert Lipsett at the USC Thornton School of Music. Appropriately, she is one of few soloists who perform the Red Violin Chaconne composed by John Corigliano. Her great-great-grandfather was John Pitcairn (19 Jan 1841 - 1916), founder of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company.

Elizabeth Pitcairn is the current owner of the Mendelssohn Red Violin (Stradivarius 1720). It was purchased in 1990 by her grandfather for her 16th birthday for a reported $1.6 million at auction at Christie's London.
