Phil O'Donnell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phil O'Donnell (born March 25, 1972, in Bellshill) is a Scottish football player.

O'Donnell began his career with Motherwell F.C. and in 1991 at the age of 18 won a Scottish Cup winners medal after scoring for the Motherwell team that beat Dundee United 4-3 in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final.

O'Donnell's blistering form made him a target for bigger clubs and he landed a boyhood dream signing for Celtic F.C. in 1994. The fee of £1.75m is, to this day, still the highest fee Motherwell have received for a player. He would go on to add to his medal collection, this time in Celtic's 1-0 win over Airdrie in the 1995 Scottish Cup final.

However injury proved to be a major concern, and in 1999 he signed for Sheffield Wednesday. The move proved to be a total disaster. He played just one match in his first season and hung around the club until he was released in 2003.

O'Donnell appeared to be heading out of the game but former club Motherwell initially offered him training facilities and the Fir Park Legend was back playing in the claret and amber in January 2004, appearing alongside his nephew, David Clarkson and is current club captain.

An achilles injury has so far restricted his appearances for season 2006/07 to a few early season matches.

He earned one cap for the Scotland national football team earned against Switzerland during his first spell at Motherwell.
