Peretz Markish

Peretz Markish (Yiddish: פּרץ מאַרקיש ; Russian: Перец Давидович Маркиш; 7 December [O.S. 25 November] 1895 in Polonnoye, currently Ukraine - 12 August 1952 in Moscow) was a Jewish Soviet writer who wrote in Yiddish.

His very distant ancestors lived in Spain. As a child he attended a cheder and was singing in the choir of the local synagogue. He served as a private in the Russian Imperial Army during World War I. In the early twenties together with Leib Kvitko and others, he was a member of the Kiev group of Yiddish poets. He was an author of numerous poems, plays and several novels. His poetry was translated into Russian by Anna Akhmatova among others. He spent time living in Berlin, Paris, London, Warsaw and Rome before returning to Russia.

Initially, it was Markish who was supposed to be accompanying Mikhoels on the trip to the U.S. and other countries, but Markish was replaced by Itzik Feffer, a secret police stooge. He was a member of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee and became together with many other Yiddish writers, a victim of the Night of the Murdered Poets.


Hers is a sample of his poetry translated into Russian by A. Klenov. The poem is entitled The Ghetto Dancer:

Танцовщица из гетто


Стремительно блистанье легких ног —
Моя любовь танцует перед вами:
Встречается с клинком стальной клинок
И объясняются, сверкая лезвиями.
От плеч струится серебристый ток,
Но что-то недосказано ногами...

Сама земля пылает, как костер,
А небо дышит стужей ледяною.
И ты танцуешь... И висит топор
Над запрокинутою головою.

Идет, идет с секирой истукан.
Он свастику и ночь несет народам.
Он тащит мертвеца. Он смел и пьян.
Он штурмовик. Он из-за Рейна родом.
Он миллионам, множа плач и стон,
На спинах выжег желтые заплаты...
Выстукивай свой звонкий мадригал,
Греми, моя подруга, каблуками.
Палач твой пол-Европы заплевал
Отравленными желтыми плевками...
Я соберу посев твоих шагов
На всех дорогах долгого изгнанья:
За двадцать пять скитальческих веков
Мой тайный клад, мой дар и достоянье.
Без крова, без дороги, без жилья,
Без языка, опоры, утешенья
Идешь, тоску свою не утоля,
И под ноги кидаются каменья.
Оплачь, сестра, свой пламенный костер,
Оплачь свою последнюю разлуку.
Станцуй вершинам вековой позор,
Станцуй долинам вековую муку!
