Paolo was previously a member of Metal Militia and was with the band since it formed in 1999 providing bass and vocals. They were considered "Next Generation of Metal" and received several Grammy considerations for best Best Rock (Metal) Album and Best Metal Performance.[1] The band missed out and the places went to Black Zodiac and Phestur.

Paolo joined Trivium in 2004 when Matt and Corey held auditions for a bass player. This was just in time for the tour with Machine Head. The members of Trivium welcomed him and commented,

  • Corey - Paolo definitely has what we have been looking for - great player, singer and just a really cool dude... now our lineup is complete and better then ever.
  • Matt - Paolo G... where do I start? Well for starters he obviously can play bass like a badass- so what separates him from the numerous other bassists in the scene? Aside from rocking out pentatonic blues shred runs on "A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation" (one of our new songs that will be on our new album "ASCENDANCY") to tearing into lightning speed thrash riffs on "Declaration" (another new tune).
  • Travis - Paolo brings a lot to the band – he is a very good addition and a badass bass player.

In an interview with Bass Guitar Magazine (July/August) Paulo reveals that he uses a variety of techniques to perform his bass-lines, as is typical of modern bassists. While he primarily uses a pick to perform the rapid plucking of his bottom strings necessary to compete with the double kick drumming of Travis Smith, he frequently adopts a two fingered plucking style to pick out the more elegant counter melodies and rapid pentatonic accompaniments necessary for some of Trivium's material. He will also frequently use a modern three fingered plucking style, as favored by Billy Sheehan, in order to achieve a gallop rhythm (two 16ths and one 8th) in the style of Iron Maiden's Steve Harris. In the same article he reveals that his preferable way to warm up is by performing chromatic exercises up and down the whole neck of the bass, using both fingers and a pick.
