Panjin (盘锦) is a prefecture-level city and a major oil-producing city in Liaoning Province, China. It is between 40°40' -41°27' in north latitude and 121°31' -122 °28' in east longitude. It has four distinct seasons, an annual average temperature of 8.6℃ and receives over 2700 hours of sunshine a year. There are over 1.2 million people living in the Panjin area.

Panjin has four immediate sub-municipal divisions.

• Shuangtaizi District (双台子区)
• Xinglongtai Disctrict (兴隆台区), where the city hall and various administrative departments are located.
• Panshan County (盘山县), subdivided into 9 towns and 5 rural towns.
• Dawa County (大洼县), subdivided into 10 towns, and 5 townships, including 1 ethnic township.

Panjin was approved the status of a city and its current boundaries by the State Council on June 5, 1984.

Panjin sits on the opening part between the Liaodong Peninsula and West Liaoning economic development zone. The Shuangtaizi River enters from the Liaodong Bay and runs through the city. The Liao River serves as the border between Panjin and the city of Yingkou. The two other cities that borders Panjin are Jinzhou and Anshan.

At the end of 2003, there were a total of 1 243 905 people residing in the Panjin. The urban population was 566 046, that's 45.51% of all residents. They reside mainly in Shuangtaizi District and Xinglongtai District.

Population Trend in Panjin

The population saw an increase of 3.81‰ in 2003. The natality was 7.60‰, and the mortality was 4.70‰, which made a natural population increase of 2.9‰.

Major places in Panjin of interest include:

• Shuanghekou State Natural Reserve, a marshland that serves as natural habitat to 321 species of animals. It also serves as one of the few breeding grounds for endangered birds such as the red-crowned crane and Saunders' Gull. Millions of birds of as much as 172 different species stop at the area during their migration, including more than 20 endangered species such as the red-crowned crane, Demoiselle Crane, white stork, black stork, white-fronted goose, whooper swan, and brown goshawk. On a special note, Panjin is also called "Home of the Cranes" for the above reasons.

• Hubin Park in Panshan, featuring the Liaohe Tablets. These stone tablets bear inscriptions of Chinese calligraphy by historical and contemporary artists.

The main industries in Panjin include oil, petroleum refinery, tourism, and agriculture, primarily rice. The short grain rice of Panjin are of high quality and great taste. Panjin is also famed for its Chinese mitten crabs, a famous delicacy in Chinese cuisine. They can be processed into crab meat tofu and "drunken crab".
