The Order of Nova Scotia, established in 2001, is the highest honour of the province of Nova Scotia. A maximum of 5 individuals are awarded annually. The first awards were presented in 2002.

The Order recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour benefiting in an outstanding manner the province and its residents.

Canadian citizens who are current or former long-term residents of the province are eligible to be nominated for and to receive the Order.

Members of the House of Assembly or the legislative assembly of a province, or members of the Senate or the House of Commons of Canada; and judges of a court are not eligible to be nominated for or to receive the Order while they are in office.

Its members are:

• a Chair, appointed by the Premier
• the Chief Justice of Nova Scotia, or a judge of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, designated by the Chief Justice
• the Clerk of the Executive Council
• three members appointed by the Premier, including the president of a university in the province and a member of the Order
• a member appointed by the Leader of the Opposition
• a member appointed by each leader of a recognized party in the House of Assembly
