The Order of Manitoba, established in 1999, is the highest honour of the Province of Manitoba. A maximum of 12 individuals are granted the award annually, except during the first year of the award's existence, when a limit of 20 was set.

The Order recognizes individuals who have made a contributions to the social, economic and cultural life of the province.

Anyone presently living in Manitoba, or former long-term residents of the province, is eligible to be considered for investiture in the Order. Elected federal, provincial and members of the judiciary are not eligible for nomination while still holding office. Posthumous nominations are not accepted.

The Advisory Council includes:

  • the Chief Justice of Manitoba (or Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench)
  • Clerk of the Executive Council
  • the President of the University of Manitoba, Brandon University or the University of Winnipeg, each serving for a two year term on a rotating basis
  • No more than four members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, each for a term of three years, one of whom is designated as chairperson of the council.
