Northamptonshire Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England.

The force area amounts to 914 square miles and has a resident population of 642,708. The force is divided into two basic command units (BCUs), Northamptonshire West and Northamptonshire North, each headed by a Chief Superintendent. Police officer strength amounts to 1288 officers.

The Chief Constable since May 2003 is Peter Maddison.

Northamptonshire Police Authority has 9 councillors, 3 justices of the peace, and 5 independent members.

The force in its present form was formed on April 1, 1966 under the Police Act 1964 as a merger of the Northamptonshire County Constabulary with Northampton Borough Police. The merged force was known as Northampton and County Constabulary until 1974 and the Local Government Act 1972. [1]

Proposals made by the Home Secretary on March 20, 2006 would see the force merge with the other four East Midlands forces to form a strategic police force for the entire region. [2]
