Madonna, an antiques dealer, and Ed, a politician who represented Manhattan's 69th Assembly District in the New York State Assembly from 1977 to 2002, wanted to raise Nicole and her sister Jennifer in a quieter environment, and moved the family upstate to Middleburgh, New York in 1982. After graduating as Middleburgh High School's class valedictorian in 1987, Nicole attended Northwestern University as a theatre major.
