Mykhaylo Verbytsky

Michael Verbytsky (March 4, 1815 - December 7, 1870) was a Ukrainian songwriter, and a Greek Catholic priest. He is mainly famous for composing the Shche ne vmerla Ukrainy ("Ukraine's glory has not perished") song on which the modern National Anthem of Ukraine is based.

Myhaylo Verbytsky was born in the Lemkivshchyna. Sources differ on an exact location of his birth giving either Jawornik Ruski[1] or Ulucz[2] (both now in Poland.)

In 2005 the chapel-pantheon over the tomb of Mykhaylo Verbytsky was opened to mark the 140th anniversary of Ukrainian national anthem and 190th anniversary of its composer.
