Mozilla Sunbird is a free, open source, cross-platform, calendar application developed by the Mozilla Foundation and many volunteers.[1] Announced in July 2003,[2] Sunbird is a standalone version of the now discontinued Mozilla Calendar Extension. The latest version is 0.3.1 [3]. Version 0.3 of Sunbird, and its "sister project", Lightning, were scheduled to be released simultaneously in late September 2006[4], but a release candidate was not made until October.[5] Mozilla Sunbird is described as "...a cross platform standalone calendar application based on Mozilla's XUL user interface language."[6] Since version 0.3, Sunbird has lost its compatibility to Windows 98.[7][8] Version 0.3 of Sunbird is also available in a portable version.

On June 15, 2004, the Sunbird developers asked the Mozilla community to submit possible new default themes and logos for Sunbird. Three proposed Sunbird logos were submitted to a community vote; Mark Carson's entry was declared the winner on August 12, 2004.[9] Mark Carson and Chris Cook also developed a theme for Windows and Linux, derived from the "winstripe" theme of Firefox. In late 2004,[10] a Mac theme was developed by Matthew 'lilmatt' Willis, similarly derived from the "pinstripe" theme of Firefox.
