The Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. First opened in 1949, the planetarium was used to train Gemini and Apollo program astronauts in celestial navigation. Until the late 1990s, it contained one of the largest working Copernican orreries in the world. The facility was donated to the University by UNC-Chapel Hill alumnus John Motley Morehead III.
Its Planetarium features a Carl Zeiss Model VI Planetarium Projector, installed in 1969. It is one of five Zeiss Model VI's currently in use in the United States. The Planetarium dome is 68 feet in diameter, making it the largest Planetarium in North Carolina.
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is expected to undergo major renovations in the near future. The renovations will include an expanded gift shop, a new star theater and projection system, and new exhibit halls.
In addition to shows in its Planetarium, MPSC offers high definition movies and live science demonstration shows in its NASA Digital Theater, classes for children and adults, summer camps, monthly skywatching sessions, guest speakers and other activities.
On February 23, 2007, MPSC opened its first interactive exhibit, Zoom In. It features current science at the extremes of size and scale.
Among its most popular planetarium shows are "Magic Tree House: Space Mission," "Destination: Space," "Sol & Company," "Extinction!" and "Star of Bethlehem."
