Miss World 1989

The 39th Miss World marked the very first staging of the Miss World pageant in a foreign location. The pageant was held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. 78 contestants took part in the pageant. It was also the first time the Soviet Union has sent a contest in any major pageant.

- This is the first time that Miss World was held overseas, in the city of Hong Kong.
- This is also the first time that more Eastern European countries (Latvia, Hungary, and U.S.S.R) competed in Miss World.
- This is also the first time that the award for the "Queen of Caribbean" was included.
- Lebanon did not compete in Miss World due to a civil war.
- Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Bulgaria, Egypt, India, St. Kitts, Swaziland, Turks & Caicos and Uruguay failed to send delegates in Miss World 1989. Pageant in India was cancelled.
- Czechoslovakia returned to Miss World after 19 years. She failed to make into the Top 10 in Miss World, but made into the semi-finals in Miss Universe 1990 in Los Angeles.
- Ireland, who placed as semi-finalist in Miss World, failed to make into the semi-finals in Miss Universe 1990.
- Aneta-Beata Kreglicka of Poland was the first Eastern European woman to win the Miss World title. She also placed as 1st runner-up in Miss International in Japan two months before.
- Norway, Bente Charlotte Rosenkilde Brunland, who made into the semi-finals in Miss Universe 1988 in Taipei, failed to make into the semi-finals in Miss World.
- Preliminary swimsuits in Miss World were held in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
- American Virgin Islands made into the semi-finals in Miss World for the first time and received an award for the "Queen of Caribbean". However, she failed to put her through the semi-finals in Miss Universe eight years later.
- Finland, Âsa Maria Lovdahl, who made into the semi-finals in Miss Universe 1989 in Cancun, Mexico, also failed to make into the semi-finals in Miss World.
