Maurice Starr

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maurice Starr (b. 1953) is a Boston-based musician, songwriter, and producer.

He was responsible for discovering the group New Edition and forming, promoting, and producing the group New Kids on the Block. His brother and collaborator is Michael Jonzun, with whom he worked in the Jonzun Crew. Starr won Billboard magazine's "Songwriter of the Year" award in 1989.

At the height of his influence in the 1980s and early 1990s, Starr's trademark sound was teen-oriented pop songs with catchy hooks. Starr himself often played the instruments straight through on his tracks, using live instruments, and in some cases in as little as one or two takes. He usually employed a synthesizer.

His son, Maurice Jr., was in the group Perfect Gentlemen.
