Martin Sherman is a screen writer and playwright who was born in 1939 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, the son of Joseph T. Sherman and Julia Shermanof. He is openly gay, and has lived in London since 1980. Sherman attended the School of Fine Arts, Boston University Boston, and achieved a BFA in dramatic arts in 1960.

His most successful film was adapted from the original script, Alive and Kicking/Indian Summer, which he authored himself. For Broadway and West End he is best known for Bent. This play was the first to deal with the treatment of homosexuals by the Nazis during World War II. Set primarily in a concentration camp, it generated controversy for two scenes in which gay inmates achieve climax through words. He has also written a book called The Boy from Oz.

Sherman has written two collections of Gay Plays. His plays and films often contain themes of homosexuality.
