The international border that separates Malaysia and Thailand (Malay: Sempadan Malaysia-Thailand, Thai: (insert Thai language here)) stretches from Kuala Perlis, Perlis in the west to Rantau Panjang, Kelantan in the east. The border was commissioned in 1900s, following the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909. On the border, there are a series of barriers constructed by Malaysia in the 1970s. It was built to discourage smuggling.

During the Malayan Emergency and the communist insurgency until the 1970s, communist insurgents frequently crossed into Thailand and back into Malaya and later Malaysia to evade capture by the Malayan and the Commonwealth military.

Four Malaysian states border with Thailand. From the west to the east, they are Perlis, Kedah, Perak and Kelantan. Another four Thai states border Malaysia. From the west, they are Satun, Songkhla, Yala and Narathiwat.

The Malaysia-Thailand barrier is a proposed separation barrier covering 100km of the 650km border with Malaysia where regular Thai patrols do not normally reach. To be constructed by Thailand, its stated purpose is to cut suspected escape routes used by militants in Thailand's largely-Muslim south, where violence has killed more than 60 people since January 2004.

Relations between the South East Asian neighbours have been strained since Thai officials said militants behind the violence had taken refuge in Malaysia. Thai security experts estimate that some 5,000 people hold dual Thai-Malaysian citizenship, and they have been allowed to cross the border at will. Both nations have expressed concern over the dual citizenship issue, and Thailand aims to bring the practice to an end.

In the 1970s, some sort of barrier was built along part of the border.
