Lunch lady is an American slang term for a woman who serves lunch in a school, or other institutional, cafeteria. Since the 1960's, lunch ladies have sometimes been unfairly caricatured as overweight, uncaring women with hairnets, rubber gloves, glasses and moles. While in fact, the traditional "Lunch Lady" is more highly compensated than her counterparts in retail food service, because of the rigid federal requirements of food sanitation, food quality and record keeping that school systems must adhere to. This attracts a higher quality, more caring and professional employee. Most school Lunch Ladies are Mothers, Grandmothers and neighbors to the students they serve, and care more for thier customers than any other type of food service employee.
