General Sonthi Boonyaratglin took over as de facto Head of Government of the Kingdom of Thailand following the coup on 19 September 2006, under the title of Chief of the Administrative Reform Council. On 1 October 2006 he named Surayud Chulanont Prime Minister, until elections in a few months' time, to be held after a new Constitution had been drafted and put to a referendum.
