Libra (astrology)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Libra is an astrological sign and is the seventh sign of the zodiac. Libra is classed as a Positive or masculine, extrovert sign; its element is Air and its Quality is Cardinal. [1] Traditionally in astrology Libra is ruled by the planet Venus. The sign opposite of Libra is Aries. Under the tropical zodiac, Libra is occupied by the Sun from September 23 to October 23, and under the sidereal zodiac, it ends on November 15. The corresponding month in the Babylonian calendar is Tišritum, dedicated to Shamash (the Sun). Libra, (The Scales of Balance), is the only symbol of the zodiac that is inanimate (it is not represented by an animal or person). SAWA
In astrology the astrological signs represent twelve equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to astrological beliefs, celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that the twelve signs at the same time are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression.[2] The scientific community generally considers astrology as a pseudoscience or superstition.[3][4] ; yet despite this, belief in astrology remains widespread.[5][6][7][8]

In mythology Libra is often associated with the Greek Goddess of Justice, Themis,[9] the Greek mythological figure of Atalanta (meaning balanced), and Astraea (daughter of Themis), who ascended to heaven and became the constellation of Virgo, and carried the scales of justice, the nearby constellation of Libra.
Libra is also associated with the Greco-Roman goddess Aphrodite/Venus and sometimes also the goddesses Eris/Discordia, along with Hermione/Concordia, Hera/Juno, Ishtar, Freyja and Frigg, and the god Xolotl.
The astrological symbol for Libra represents the scales. Many modern astrologers regard it as the most desirable of zodiacal types because it represents the zenith of the year, the high point of the seasons, when the harvest of all the hard work of the spring is reaped.
Astrologers broadly agree that the following are the characteristics of Libra: [10] The Libra person is co-operative, diplomatic, open-minded, urbane, fair, partnership-oriented, avoids conflict, easy-going, even-tempered, refined, balanced, graceful, artistic, home-body, charming, debative, flexible, sensual, idealistic, equalitarian and sociable. They also seem to have a great chance at making vast amounts of wealth and fortune. They can sometimes also rationalize, be easily deterred, indecisive, lazy, changeable, gullible, easily influenced, flirtatious, conceited, perfectionist, aloof, mildly vengeful, can't say no, quarrelsome, over-seriousness, cold, self-indulgent, cruel, jealous, and some are violent.
- Likes: fairness, equality, home, stability, happiness, justice, saying yes
- Dislikes: drama, yelling, being ignored, judgmental people/being judged, saying no

Astrologers believe that each of the twelve signs has identifiable physical traits. Physically, individuals born under the sign of Libra supposedly tend to have a graceful figure; charming appearance; a roundish head; small and refined features; a high forehead; and a 'trademark' dimple. And also thought to be above average height.[citation needed]
The following items are traditionally associated with Libra: [11]
- Birthstone = Sapphire,Opal
- Colours = Pink, Pale Green, Blue, Lavender
- Gemstones = Opal, Tourmaline, Aventurine
- Metal = Steel, Gold, Platinum, Copper
The Indian equivalent of Libra is Tula; the Chinese equivalent is thought to be the idealistic, fair-minded Dog, whose lunar month is 8 October - 7 November.[12]
