The Legitimist pretender to the French throne is Louis Alphonse, Duke of Anjou as the senior member of the House of Bourbon who considers Philip V of Spain's renounciation of his claim to the throne of France for himself and his descendants as null and void.

The Legitimist succession to the French throne includes all males who are descended in the male line from Hugh Capet through legal marriages. Morganatic marriages do not exist in the succession to the French throne. However, if a child is born to unmarried parents who subsequently marry, this does not render him legitimate for succession to the French throne. Thus, the first child of the Duke of Noto (born when his parents were unmarried) is not in the line of succession, but his two younger brothers (born after their parents' marriage) are.

According to Legitimist usage, dynasts who are French nationals are accorded the style Prince of the Blood (prince du sang)
