Labette County (standard abbreviation: LB) is a county located in southeast Kansas, in the central United States. The population was estimated to be 22,169 in the year 2005.[1] Its county seat is Oswego,[2] and its most populous city is Parsons.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,692 km² (653 sq mi), of which 1,680 km² (649 sq mi) is land and 12 km² (4 sq mi), or 0.69%, is water.[3]

Labette County's population was estimated to be 22,169 in the year 2005, a decrease of 580, or -2.6%, over the previous five years.[1]
As of the U.S. Census in 2000,[4] there were 22,835 people, 9,194 households, and 6,114 families residing in the county. The population density was 14/km² (35/sq mi). There were 10,306 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 89.28% White, 4.66% Black or African American, 1.95% Native American or Alaska Native, 0.32% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 2.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.07% of the population.
There were 9,194 households out of which 31.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% were married couples living together, 10.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.50% were non-families. 29.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the county the population was spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,875, and the median income for a family was $37,519. Males had a median income of $29,043 versus $21,706 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,525. About 8.90% of families and 12.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.70% of those under age 18 and 11.90% of those age 65 or over.

Labette County is divided into sixteen townships. The cities of Chetopa, Oswego, and Parsons are considered governmentally independent and are excluded from the census figures for the townships.
