IMDb profile

Kal Ho Naa Ho (Devanagari कल हो ना हो, Nastaliq: کل ہو نہ ہو, English: Tomorrow May or May Not Be) is a 2003 Bollywood film set in New York City. It stars Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Saif Ali Khan. The film was directed by first-timer Nikhil Advani; it was produced and co-written by Karan Johar, better known as the director of the hit films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).

This movie resembles Dil Chahta Hai (2001) in blending Bollywood and Hollywood conventions with high production values. While copyright violation has long run rampant in the Bollywood film industry, Kal Ho Naa Ho is notable for having licensed the rights to Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" for an extended musical sequence taking place in the streets in New York.

Because of its familiar setting and music, accessibility to non-Indians, good production values, and respect for copyright, Kal Ho Naa Ho has been used to introduce Bollywood to markets where Indian films have been rare.

The film was screened at the Valenciennes, ERA New Horizons, Marrakech International and Helsinki Film Festival.

Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta) is an angry young woman, for more than one reason. Her father committed suicide when she needed him the most, leaving Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan), his wife, to raise their children all alone. Lajjo (Sushma Seth), Jennifer's mother-in-law, blames Jennifer for the suicide. Furthermore, Jennifer is unhappy because Lajjo refuses to accept Gia, a six-year-old girl whom Jennifer adopted, as her granddaughter. In addition, the restaurant Jennifer operates is faltering. The only factors that redeem Naina's life are the toiling and tolerant Jennifer and Naina's bumbling MBA classmate Rohit (Saif Ali Khan)

Aman Mathur (Shah Rukh Khan), a happy-go-lucky man, arrives in Naina's neighbourhood and soon changes everything with his contagious joviality and zest for life.

Noticing the sadness of his new neighbors, Aman intervenes. His insistence on their activity, his revival of their financial success, and his enthusiastic optimism soon changes their lives for the better. Although Naina is initially reluctant to enjoy the presence of Aman, she grows to like him and eventually to love him.

Meanwhile, her friend Rohit has fallen in love with her, though he does not tell her so because Naina informs him that she loves Aman before he has the opportunity. Rohit goes home to help prepare for his parents' anniversary and meets a young woman called Camilla who he starts dating. Camilla is a gold-digger whose primary objective is to marry Rohit for his parents money.

During this Aman finds out that Naina loves him and tells her that he is already married. He then contacts Rohit and urges him to make a play for Naina even though he has been trapped into an engagement. Aman resolves this by having Rohit tell the said woman that he will inherit nothing. She leaves Rohit, who is now in a position to court Naina.

Aman has told everyone that he is married to Priya. This is revealed to be a lie, told by Aman to disguise the fact that he is dying of a weak heart. It is then revealed that Aman, knowing that his own lifespan is limited, goes through life urging people to enjoy themselves and one another in the present moment, because (as the title says, when translated into English) "There may be no tomorrow".

His excursions into such philanthropy include, in addition to lightheartedness and facilitation of friendships and courtships, his revelation that Gia is Naina's half-sister through their father's extramarital affair.

As the film progresses, Aman's weakness grows greater. One episode of intense excitement nearly kills him. Naina learns the truth from Priya. Aman eventually dies of his weakness, shortly after Rohit and Naina get married. The movie is the recollection of Naina to Gia in the future.

Pre-production of the film began in 2003. Kareena Kapoor was initially the first choice for Naina, but due to money issues she refused the role. Shooting began in 2003 in New York City. A major portion of the movie was shot in Toronto.

Kal Ho Naa Ho was the second Bollywood film to attain wide release in Germany in early 2005 (the first was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham). The Hindi title was translated as Lebe und denke nicht an morgen ("Live, and do not think about tomorrow") but the film was generally publicized under the somewhat prosaic (English) title Indian Love Story. Since its release, Bollywood has become a popular genre in Germany, and other Indian films have also been shown on prime time television and have sold well on DVD. [1]

It was released in Poland in May 2006 as Gdyby jutra nie bylo (If Tomorrow Never Comes), and in France in 2005 as New-York Masala.

This film is thought to have been inspired from Bollywood classic Anand starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. Shahrukh Khan portrayed the role of Rajesh Khanna. But eventually Karan Johar denied such news and quoted that it has no match with Anand as it is a classic movie of Bollywood.

The soundtrack of the film was released on 6 October 2003 in various formats. The music is conducted by the award-winning trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. They won their first Filmfare Best Music Director Award for this soundtrack, as well as the National Film Award for Best Music Direction.

The title track Kal Ho Naa Ho was the most notable as it won the Zee Cine Award Best Track of the Year, and won Sonu Nigam the Best Playback Singer Male at the Filmfare and at the National Film Award ceremonies, respectively.

The rights to Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" were bought for use as the title of one of the songs and part of an otherwise original song.

The music went on to do well in the charts, and became one of the most successful music albums of the year. [2]
