KGMB is the licensed broadcast affiliate of CBS in Hawaii, with its main transmitter located in Honolulu broadcasting on channel 9 (analog) and 22 (digital). The station is owned by HITV Operating Company, Inc. Like all major television stations in Hawaii, KGMB operates multiple satellite stations and translators across the Hawaiian Islands to rebroadcast programs outside of metropolitan Honolulu.

KGMB was the first television station in Hawaii, airing its first programs on December 1, 1952. It was owned by a partnership of future congressman Cec Heftel, owner of KGMB-AM 590, and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. It carried programming from all three major networks, but was a primary CBS affiliate owing to KGMB-AM's long affiliation with CBS Radio. NBC disappeared from the schedule when KONA-TV (now KHON-TV) signed on in 1953, and ABC went to KULA-TV (now KITV) signed on in 1954, leaving KGMB as a sole CBS affiliate.

Lee Enterprises bought KGMB-AM-TV in 1977. It sold off KGMB-AM in 1980; it is now KSSK-AM.

In 2000, Lee exited television and sold most of its television holdings, including KGMB, to Emmis Communications. Emmis already owned KHON-TV, and KHON moved its studios to KGMB's facility. As Emmis itself prepared to exit the television industry, it sold KHON to Montecito Broadcast Group in 2006. On February 20, 2007 Emmis announced that KGMB and its satellites have been sold to HITV Operating Company, Inc. (a subsidiary of MCG Capital), for $40 million. [1] The FCC granted approval for this sale in late May 2007, and the sale was completed on June 4.

From 2002 to 2004, KGMB carried select programming from the now-defunct UPN television network as a secondary affiliation. In the Honolulu market, KFVE previously was a UPN affiliate from 1995 until 2002, when the station decided to drop UPN and switch its primary affiliation to The WB. KGMB was one of two stations that aired UPN programming on a secondary basis in Hawaii during this period; KHON was the other. KIKU-TV picked up secondary UPN affiliation in the fall of 2004.

For many years, KGMB called itself One of the Good Things About Hawaii with its rich history of local television programming exclusively in Hawaii. Now with an emphasis on weather, the station brands itself Hawaii's Severe Weather Station.

Shortly after HITV took over, KGMB redesigned its website. Its copyright tagline now incorporates the station's former longtime slogan.

KGMB clears all CBS programming, although the station will occasionally pre-empt CBS primetime shows until late nights in order to broadcast local events.

From September 2005 to August 2007, KGMB aired the nationally syndicated weekday morning news show The Daily Buzz every Monday through Friday from 5-7 am. (Although The Daily Buzz was/is a three-hour show, KGMB only aired the first two hours.) During this period it was the only "Big Three" affiliate in the United States carrying the show. The station dropped the show after its August 17, 2007 edition to make room for KGMB's new morning newscast titled Sunrise on KGMB9, which launched on September 17. The Daily Buzz moved to KHON's CW digital subchannel "Hawaii's CW 93" the following Monday, August 20. Ironically, the show competes with KHON's own "Hawaii's Morning News" program.

KGMB currently airs CBS' daytime soap operas in a radically different order from the main network feed; specifically, The Bold and the Beautiful (11:30 am), Guiding Light (12 Noon), The Young and the Restless (1 pm), and As the World Turns (2 pm). In most other markets, Y&R is aired first, followed by B&B, ATWT and GL.

On weekdays (outside of network hours), KGMB airs the syndicated first-run shows Jeopardy!, Rachael Ray, and The Insider during the daytime, and reruns of the sitcoms Frasier and One on One during the late night hours.

On Monday, September 10, the new syndicated game show Merv Griffin's Crosswords joined KGMB's daytime lineup, airing weekdays at 11 am and 4 pm. Family Feud moved to KHON, keeping its 11 am timeslot.

KGMB-DT currently broadcasts in 1080i on channel 9.1. Live-action events such as NFL and college basketball games are thus available in high-definition to Honolulu residents. Recently, KGMB also began time-shifting some shows in high-definition[1], including CSI Miami and The Unit, but not Letterman. The shows, which are received from the mainland in the afternoon, were previously recorded in standard definition before being rebroadcast in the evening.

KGMB is the only one of the four major networks in Honolulu whose HD channel is not available through Oceanic Time Warner Cable[2]. Standard-definition KGMB is available on cable channels 7 and 87. A temporary agreement was reached between KGMB and Oceanic Time Warner to carry Super Bowl XLI in high-definition.[3]
