Justin Chancellor

Justin Gunnar Walte Chancellor (born November 19, 1971) is an English-born musician; currently the bass player for Tool and formerly of the band Peach (GB). After settling in the US - besides his engagement in his musical projects - he and his wife Shelee run a store called Lobal Orning in Topanga, California, dedicated to music, literature and film "that shaped and changed" both of them.

  • Chancellor uses Wal basses, which he fell for while recording Ænima.[1]
  • He formerly used a Musicman Stingray and used it to record three songs on Ænima.
  • For amplification he currently uses a Gallien-Krueger 2001RB and older Mesa Boogie 8x10 (eight ten inch speakers) and 4x12 (four twelve inch speakers) cabinets. On Lateralus he used Mesa Boogie amps, an M-2000 with no effects and a Mesa Boogie M-Pulse with a ProCo Turbo Rat and Boss GEB7 EQ with Mesa Boogie 8x10 cabinets, he also ran a third channel through a Demeter Amplification VTBP-201S preamp.
  • For effects he uses a Pro Co RAT Turbo Rat Distortion Pedal, Tech 21 SansAmp GT2, Colorsound Tone Bender, Boss DD-6, Boss GEB7 EQ, Boss BF-3, Boss CEB-3, Digitech Bass Whammy, Guyatone VTX, Guyatone BR-2 Bottom Wah Rocker and a Crowther Prunes & Custard.
  • Chancellor is a pioneer when it comes to using the Digitech Bass Whammy. It is featured in many songs which makes him sound like he's playing a guitar or synth. Songs with the Whammy are "Eulogy" (fifth up harmony), "Third Eye (octave up)," "Schism" (octave up), "Lateralus" (octave up), "Disposition" (fifth up/octave up harmony), "Vicarious" (octave up harmony), "The Pot" (octave up), "Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)" (octave up) and "Right In Two"(fifth up/sixth up harmony).
  • Chancellor uses Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings.

  • Chancellor appeared on bass in the Isis song 'Altered Course' on their 2004 album Panopticon.
  • Chancellor is often seen wearing football shirts, which makes him stand out as the English one in Tool. At Download 2006, he wore an England shirt onstage, on the eve of England's opening World Cup game against Paraguay.
  • Chancellor is of Norwegian descent and he speaks the language fluently. [1]
  • Chancellor is synesthetic.
  • Chancellor has a tattoo of a shell/spiral on the inside of his lower left fore-arm.
