Juniata, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juniata (also known as Juniata Park) is a neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia, which is a section of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, however it is sometimes said to be in North Philadelphia because it is west of Frankford Creek. Juniata is located south of the Juniata Golf Club, a mini-course in Tacony Creek Park. It is bordered to the north and east by Frankford, to the northwest by Feltonville, to the west by Hunting Park, and to the south by Kensington and Port Richmond.

The golf course was designed by Ed Ault in 1930. It is a par 66 course that includes the Frankford Creek as a water feature in six of the holes.

Throughout much of the 20th century, Juniata was a working class, heavily unionized, Irish American community.

Juniate was a great place to grow up. Children either attended school at Hopkinson Public School or Holy Innocents Catholic School. Juniata was a great place to live. There were war bungalows built to help during the war period. And, many of the families lived in the area since the creation of the houses in the 40's. Many of the city activities that took place are as follows:

. pig trucks travelled along Castor Avenue Daily (the stench was awful!, today ruled have changed, pig trucks no longer carry the stench)

. hucksters used to sell vegetables in the streets using horse drawn carriages

. garbage disposal - there used to be garbage cans (small trash cans) placed in the alleys that local farmers would collect from. They would use it as their feed for their animals.

. Scanlon Ice Rink - every friday we would walk to scanlon to ice skate.

. Piccoli Playground - was the area tha that kids would hand out in to have fun. ONce a swimming pool was built, swimming would occur.

. nutcracker - considered the best sledding slope in Northeast Philadelphia!
