Jacoby Ellsbury

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacoby Ellsbury (born September 11, 1983, in Madras, Oregon) is a baseball player who is currently the # 1 prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization and rated as the # 33 prospect for 2007 by Baseball America. He started the 2006 season as the Single A Wilmington Blue Rocks' starting center fielder, and was promoted on July 12 to the Double A Portland Sea Dogs. Jacoby is projected to be in the Major Leagues by mid-2008, when he could push current Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp for his job. Jacoby is considered to be one of the top outfield prospects in baseball along with fellow Oregonian Trevor Crowe of the Cleveland Indians farm system

Jacoby was drafted by Boston 23rd overall in the 2005 MLB entry draft out of Oregon State University. He was originally drafted but not signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 23rd round of the 2002 entry draft.

With the addition of JD Drew to the Red Sox roster as the right fielder, pushing Wily Mo Peña to be the reserve outfielder, Jacoby is now expected to return as the starting center fielder for the Sea Dogs in 2007, with David Murphy returning to the Red Sox Triple A affiliate Pawtucket Red Sox as their center fielder.

Jacoby participated in the Red Sox 2007 Spring Training camp in Fort Myers, FL as a non-roster invitee and was assigned to the minor league camp on 3/9 after batting .250, while earning rave reviews for his fielding, in 8 games at the Major League camp .
