Ivan and Charika Corea are the founders of Autism Awareness Campaign UK and parents of a young son, Charin, with autism. Autism Awareness Year, which was supported by 800 UK organisations, including the National Autistic Society, Autism London, British Instiute for Brain Injured Children, Disabilities Trust among a whole host of charities struck a chord with the general public and garnered a great deal of TV and press coverage. The Autism Awareness Campaign is now one of the most successful ongoing campaigns connected with disabilities in the UK.

The Coreas have said they were inspired by their son Charin to launch the Autism Awareness Campaign to create greater awareness of the condition, and to campaign for better public services in education, health, speech therapy and respite care for the 535,000 autistic community and the 90,000 autistic children in the UK.

The Autism Awareness Campaign enjoys the support of Parliamentarians of all parties, including Prime Minister Tony Blair. Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrats, SNP MPs, Plaid Cymru and Independent parliamentarians have supported the campaign by backing early day motions in the Palace of Westminster.

Linda Perham MP sponsored one of the most important debates on autism in the House of Commons as a result of the campaign and Baroness Uddin of Bethnal Green launched a debate in the House of Lords in 2002 Autism Awareness Year.
