Investec (JSE: INL) is an international, specialist banking group that caters to the high-end market, providing a diverse range of financial products and services.

The company was established as a leasing company in 1974 in Johannesburg and acquired a banking license in 1980. In 1986 Investec listed its stock on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange in South Africa. In July 2002, a Dual Listed Companies structure was implemented in regards companies listed in both London and Johannesburg.
The group operates five business units:
- Private Banking
- Capital Markets
- Investment Banking
- Asset Management
- Property
In 1998 Investec acquired Guinness Mahon, a leading London based merchant bank for £95m: the deal also involved the purchase of Henderson Crosthwaite, a firm of stockbrokers.[1]
Currently, Investec operates primarily in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The group also has banking operations in Ireland, Switzerland, Mauritius, Guernsey and the United States.
In October 2006, Investec acquired sponsorship rights to the Australian section of the international rugby union competition, the Super 14.
