The Infinite Empire was a space empire created by the Rakata about 49,000 years prior to the Battle of Yavin, and existed over a period of 21,000 years (49,000 - 28,000 BBY). It is the earliest known galactic government, far predating the formation of the Galactic Republic in 25,000 BBY. The Rakata were a scientifically advanced species that used their knowledge to conquer and enslave other species throughout the galaxy. At its height, the Infinite Empire consisted of more than 500 subject worlds with a population of ten billion Rakata and one trillion non-Rakata slaves. Subject worlds included Honoghr, Dantooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan, Tatooine and Korriban.

Some of the Infinite Empire's achievements include terraforming machinery, semi-sentient star maps and computers, and the Star Forge. Among its many crimes were those of aggressive war, slavery, and the destruction of the climate of the planet Tatooine, which became a desert after being bombarded by the Rakata.

The Infinite Empire collapsed due to both a long civil war and a virulent plague that affected only the Rakata some 28,000 years prior to the Battle of Yavin. The plague also caused a decrease over time of the Rakatans' Force sensitivity, eventually causing them to lose the ability to control their technology. As their empire collapsed around them, the remaining Rakata retreated to their home world of Rakata Prime, but the civil war continued. The remaining Rakata eventually devolved into a barbaric society.

This decreased Force sensitivity may have been a balancing effect of the Force against races who abuse its power. The same circumstances are very similar to that of the Yuuzhan Vong who were stripped of the Force under very similar circumstances, being that they abused the power of the Force in the conquest of their own galaxy.

Following the collapse of the Infinite Empire, its former slave worlds destroyed all traces of its existence. Thus, the empire was lost to history until the events of the Jedi Civil War, when Revan and Malak discovered Rakatan Star Maps leading to Rakata Prime and the Star Forge. Its influence on the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, New Republic, and other nations of that era is unknown. However, considering that the Rakata and their Infinite Empire were long forgotten even in the very early days of the Old Republic, and is never seen outside of the Knights of the Old Republic series, said influence is most likely nil.

However, the Rakata Empire does re-emerge in the novel Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, as Darth Bane travels to the Rakata home planet in search of Sith teachings. It is there that he discovers a Sith Holocron created by Darth Revan. Using the teachings of the Holocron, Bane eventually manipulates the Brotherhood of Darkness into destroying itself, leaving only himself as the last remaining Sith Lord.
