Highbridge, Bronx
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Highbridge is a neighborhood in New York City located in the western part of The Bronx, adjacent to the Harlem River. Traditional boundaries are the Harlem River on the west, 161st Street on the south, the E.L. Grant Highway on the north and east and Jerome Avenue, also on the east. Ogden Avenue is the main thoroughfare through Highbridge.
The neighborhood takes its name from the bridge built in 1848 to carry water across the Harlem River. It is a mainly residential area, within walking distance to Yankee Stadium which lies to the south. To the north lie the Alexander Hamilton Bridge and Washington Bridge, which link the Bronx and Manhattan. Once a predominately Irish neighborhood, African Americans and Dominicans make up the majority of the present day population of High Bridge.
In March 2007, a fire broke out at 1022 Woodycrest Avenue, killing several people. It was one of the worst fires in the Bronx since the 1970s.
