He transferred 1980 to Inter Milan, and in the second year won with the nerazzurri the Italian Cup. Afterwards he moved to AS Roma, where he won the Italian championship in his first year. Then he returned to Austria Vienna to finish his playing career.

Prohaska was successful also with the Austrian national team. He took part in two Football World Cups: 1978 and 1982.

1989 Prohaska retired from playing. Briefly after his retirement as player Prohaska started to work as a coach at Austria Vienna. He became Austrian football champion twice and Austrian Cup Winner twice.

1993 he became coach of the Austrian National Team and qualified 1997 as group winners for the Football World Cup 1998 in France. 1999 he resigned after a 9-0 debacle in Spain. From 1999 to 2000 he became coach of Austria Vienna again.

In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Austria by the Austrian Football Association as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. [1]

Currently he is working as a football commentator for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).

His nickname "Schneckerl" depends on his curly haircut in his youth, in Viennese dialect.
