Hawulti (monument)

The Hawulti is an Aksumite era obelisk located in Matara, Eritrea.
Felled and broken in antiquity, the Hawulti was repaired and set in place by Italians during their occupation of Eritrea; its exact original location is not known for sure. It is inscribed with what is said to be the oldest known example of the Ge'ez script (fifth or sixth century BC).
The Hawulti was toppled and damaged[1][2] by Ethiopian troops in the short occupation of southern Eritrea during the Eritrean-Ethiopian War. It has since been repaired by the National Museum of Eritrea.[3]
