Sutton was born in Hamilton but spent a good part of his youth playing soccer in Danbury, Connecticut where his father's employer transferred him. But Sutton warmed up to his Canadian roots through six years with USL's Montreal Impact, four of them as a USL All-Star and, from 2005 on, with the national team.
Sutton's pro career started in 1999 with the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer, and he also spent time as a backup with the MetroStars and played for the Cincinnati Riverhawks.
In the 2004-2005 season he had a trial with English sides Bolton Wanderers and Fulham. On 29 November 2006, it was announced that Sutton would return to MLS, being allocated to the newly-formed Toronto FC for the 2007 season. Greg Sutton was known as Torontos starting goalkeeper until receiving a concussion during Gold Cup training. Symptoms keep recurring and he has not made his return.[1]
Greg made his Canadian National team debut on January 18, 2004 against Barbados. He was invited to the Men's world cup team development camp in July, 2004 against the hearts in a 1-1 draw. He earned his second senior cap and shutout against Northern Ireland in February, 2005.
