Goodnight Nurse formed in 2001 after bass player Paul Taite responsed to an ad Joel Little, Allan Bagley & Jaden Parkes put on the stairs at Shadows, the Auckland University bar. Goodnight Nurse met and practised for the first time on June 25, 2001 in Parkes' garage. At the time of their formation, Taite had only been playing bass for 3 months.[1]
They played their first gig at Papa Jacks/Voodoo Lounge in Auckland in early 2002. They were part of the Boost Mobile NZ Schools Tour in 2004, during which they played at 120 venues nationwide over a period of five months, the single largest tour done by a band in New Zealand history.[2] Other bands that have participated in the Boost Mobile NZ Schools Tour are Steriogram (2002), Wash (2003), My Life Story (2005) and Falter (2006). Goodnight Nurse have also gone on a tour with two other very successful New Zealand bands, Steriogram and 48May, and continue their frequent performances at live shows.
Goodnight Nurse's debut album, Always and Never, went Gold a single week after it was released and debuted to place number 5 on the RIANZ New Zealand Top 40 Albums Chart. The album stayed in the Top 40 for 5 weeks (January 30 - February 27). Always and Never includes their hit singles "Loner", "Going Away", "Taking Over", "Our Song", "Death Goes To Disco", and "My Only". It also has a hidden bonus track.
Goodnight Nurse also recorded a rock cover of Kelis' hit song "Milkshake", which appeared on the CD single for "Our Song".
Lead singer Joel Little describes the band as "a pop rock band that's been influenced by punk."[3] Goodnight Nurse are frequently called New Zealand's answer to American pop-punk bands such as Green Day and Blink 182.
