Leonard grew up in New York and, prior to entering the adult industry, worked for three years as a registered representative of the now-defunct Schweickart and Company on Wall Street. She also worked for various public relations firms, starting out as a copywriter for Elektra Records.

Leonard performed in hardcore pornography from the mid-1970s and was in some of the movies that are considered to be classics of early pornography, including The Trouble With Young Stuff, All About Gloria Leonard and The Opening of Misty Beethoven. She worked with Constance Money, Leslie Bovee, Sharon Mitchell, Jennifer Welles, Samantha Fox before retiring from the screen in the early 1980s. She is a member of X-Rated Critics Organization (XRCO) and the (AVN) Halls of Fame.

Leonard served as "publisher" of High Society for 14 years, introducing for the first time such features as nude celebrities and phone sex. She was married to porn director Bobby Hollander during the 1980s. They divorced in 1990.

Leonard served as administrative director of Adult Film Association, the film industry trade association, from 1989 to 1992 until that organization merged with the Free Speech Coalition. After being away for several years in the 1990s, she returned to the industry in 1997 and was elected president of the F.S.C. in 1998.
