The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is the government agency responsible for building and maintaining state roads in the U.S. state of Georgia. Their headquarters is located across the street from the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta.
An act of the Legislature created the State Highway Department on August 16, 1916. Later, in 1972, it was followed by the creation of the Georgia Department of Transportation. The duties of the Georgia Department of Transportation are to plan, construct, maintain and improve Georgia's road and bridges. Moreover, the department provides planning and financial support for mass transit and airports and provides planning airports and air safety. Finally, the Department of Transportation provides administrative assistance to the State Road and Tollway Authority and the Georgia Rail Passenger Authority.[1]
