Front was first published by Cabal Communications in 1998, it was created to rival IPC's publication Loaded. It is part of the British "lads' mag" genre of magazines.

The title's first editor was Piers Hernu who aimed to create a magazine with more attitude than its competitors, an ethos it retains to this day. The original cover strapline was "Loaded with ladies", seen by many as a cheeky dig at a competing title. Today the magazine uses the strapline "A proper gents' mag". This strapline is generally juxtaposed with gritty or puerile imagery in a move away from the increasing homogenisation of the men's magazine market.

It caters to a demographic of 16-25 year-old males.

Whilst a major selling point is the photo-shoots of models, the magazine also focuses heavily on music, films, gadgets and games, plus sections on fashion and sport. Model Alex Sim-Wise recently joined Front as a columnist. Glamour shoots within the magazine usually involve well-known models rather than celebrities.

The magazine has also been responsible for a number of high profile stunts, most notably smuggling an Eric Cantona lookalike into the Manchester United team photo during a Champions League game. Today it is edited by Joe Barnes and published by Flip Media who are based in Islington, London.
