Freedmen's Bureau Bill

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freedmen's Bureau Bill was the legislative authorization for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands that had been set up by Abraham Lincoln in 1865 as part of the Army. The bill was passed by Congress on 19 Feb. 1866 but vetoed by President Andrew Johnson, setting up a major confrontation between Johnson and the Radical Republicans. On July 16, 1866, the bill was passed over his veto and became law. It was a major factor in Reconstruction.
