Fordham, Bronx

Fordham is a working class neighborhood in the New York City borough of The Bronx. Home to Fordham University and the regionally famous Arthur Avenue/Belmont area, Fordham runs from 183rd Street up to 196th Street/Kingsbridge Road and from Jerome Avenue to the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden (i.e. Bronx Park.) Norwood, Bedford Park, and University Heights are neighborhoods lying on the borders of Fordham.
Fordham Road is a major shopping hub in the neighborhood, home to such stores as the Gap, Conway, Duane Reade, Rite Aid and Dr. Jay's. It also has a wide variety of less famous but very fashionable stores like Chocolate, Rush, Energy, Sammys, Bon Bini, Pretty Girl and Jacklyns.
The Fordham neighborhood was featured in the film, A Bronx Tale (though the actual filming location was Astoria, Queens). The 1979 coming-of-age movie The Wanderers was also filmed in Fordham and adjacent neighborhoods.
Fordham has been the setting of several novels, including The Old Neighborhood by Avery Corman and the Richard Price novel that the basis for the movie The Wanderers.
Edgar Allan Poe and his wife/cousin Virginia Clemm moved to Fordham because Virginia was battling tuberculosis. She died there on January 30, 1847, just two years before Edgar died.
Fordham University has also served as a filming location in several pictures such as A Beautiful Mind, The Exorcist, and Quiz Show.
