Emsdetten is a town in the district of Steinfurt, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated on the river Ems, approx. 13 km south-east of Rheine and 25 km north-west of Münster.
On November 20, 2006, at about 9:30 AM local time, an 18-year old gunman, Sebastian Bosse, entered Geschwister Scholl School (a Realschule) firing several shots and injuring 37 (16 of these were policemen injured by a smoke grenade while entering the school) people. Bosse, who graduated from the school in 2005, then killed himself with a shot to his head. In an Internet posting and a video message from his parents' living room shortly before the attack, Bosse stated that he hated people and was taught to be a 'loser' at this school. He also left a suicide note on his Internet homepage, which is now closed. [1] [2]
The event caused renewed demands for a prohibition of violent computer games "Killerspiele" in Germany, even though the suicide note shows no connection between computer games and the shooting, citing social reasons instead.
