De Ravin was born in Mount Eliza, Victoria, Australia[3] (a south suburb of Melbourne). Having studied ballet since the age of nine, she was accepted into the highly selective Australian Ballet School at fifteen. There, she performed in productions with the Australian Ballet Company as well as Danceworld 301.[4] De Ravin studied acting at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art,[2] and with the Prime Time Actors Studio in Los Angeles.[5]

She first starred in BeastMaster. De Ravin was previously best known for her role as alien/human hybrid Tess Harding on the hit teen drama Roswell. De Ravin portrayed an alien who was determined to fulfill her destiny and became a mother with her boyfriend Max. Near the end of the series she sacrificed her life to hide the identities of her son and the other alien hybrids. She landed this role one month after moving to Los Angeles[4] at the age of 18.[6]

On January 1, 2005, de Ravin became engaged to actor Josh Janowicz while visiting her family in Australia. They married in a small ceremony on June 19, 2006 in Melbourne, Australia. They dated four years prior to the marriage.[citation needed] She lived in Los Angeles, California with Janowicz,[7], commuting back and forth between Oahu, Hawaii where Lost is filmed.[8]

As of January 2007, she separated from her husband after six months of marriage.[9]
