Several attempts have been made to establish an ELSA group in London. The current ELSA London was formed in February 2005. The idea was to create an association of law students (undergraduates, postgraduates, trainees and pupils) from all London law schools. For too long there had been a divide between prestigious London University colleges (e.g. King's College, UCL, SOAS, Queen Mary and LSE) and the post 1992 "new universities" (see Further and Higher Education Act 1992). By creating an association open to ALL law students, ELSA London hopes to break down some of the barriers that still, unfortunately, exist within the legal profession - even at student level.

The idea behind ELSA London is to enable all students to have access to the same information, lectures, seminars, social events, international opportunities and exposure to different legal cultures. The UK has a very strong tradition of student law societies based at individual universities and law schools. ELSA London is not intended to replace these societies as it is an association and membership is not restricted to students from any one particular institution. ELSA London strives for a co-operative and collaborative relationship with law societies and in this regard, has chosen to adopt an ALSA model.

ELSA London is a non-political, not-for-profit group (incidentally the only ELSA group organised as a limited company), run by law students for law students. ELSA London is currently sponsored by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary but is always looking for more sponsorship so that it can provide more educational and vocational activities. ELSA London would also like to develop a Pro Bono scheme and is currently looking for partners.

Although ELSA London is an independent, self-governing group within the UK it has a close relationship with ELSA Cambridge.

ELSA London is part of a European network of over 200 local ELSA groups. Between October 2005 - March 2006 ELSA London has had exchanges with ELSA Iceland, ELSA Rotterdam, ELSA Gdansk and ELSA Rome.
