Dianetics 55! is a Dianetics/Scientology book published in 1954 by L. Ron Hubbard.

In its preface, Hubbard explains that he considered the book to be the first true sequel to 1950's Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health , even though numerous books on the subject had appeared in the intervening years:

"Dianetics moved into the world on May 9, 1950, with the publication of a book, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. It moved with violence even though its message was peace... Dianetics was an adventure into the dark realms of the secret to accumulate knowledge and to establish the truth.... In Dianetics 55! we have, actually, the second book of Dianetics. Everyone has assigned the title First Book to Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. But nobody has ever referred to Science of Survival, published in 1951, as the Second Book. They haven't because it obviously wasn't.... This is the Second Book of Dianetics. It could mean a new Earth, a new freedom."

Contents

Currently Dianetics 55! is not listed as being available from the Church of Scientology on their online catalog. [1] However, as of November 2006, Amazon.com has sufficient backstock to continue offering copies. An "Extension Course Pack" for enhanced study, once offered from the Church, is currently also out of print.

Scientologist researcher Frank Gordon, in his book Terra Incognita: A Collection of Scientological Essays, notes that Dianetics 55! is unique as being the sole source in all of Hubbard's writings that addresses "The Game" in an auditing process. [2]

Main article: Altered texts in Scientology doctrine

The book has gone through a number of printings since its initial run, and has undergone numerous alterations over the years, despite the fundamental Scientology tenet that Hubbard's works are considered immutable Standard Tech, not to be altered in any way.

The Auditor's Code has been changed since David Miscavige took control of the Church after Hubbard's death in 1986. The 1982 edition of Dianetics 55! has:

17. Never use Scientology to obtain personal or unusual favors or unusual compliance from the preclear for the auditor's own personal profit.
18. Estimate the current case of your preclear with reality and do not process another imagined case.
19. Do not explain, justify, or make excuses for any auditor mistakes, whether real or imagined. (pg.54)

These three points, which had been part of the Auditor's Code since 1968, had disappeared from the book by its 1989 edition. (pg.72)

This sentence from chapter 14, "The One-Shot Clear", has been expanded:

1982 edition: "Any argument which has been in existence was born out of the psychiatrist's observation of "compulsive exteriorization". (pg.157)

1989 edition: "Any argument which has been in existence was born out of the psychiatrist's observation of "compulsive exteriorization" by an individual so detesting his body that he stayed outside of it." (pg.197)
