Dermot Fitzpatrick

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dermot Fitzpatrick (born April 1940) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He is a native of Dublin city, and was educated at Coláiste Mhuire, an Irish language secondary school in the city, and at University College Dublin, from which he graduated with a degree in medicine. Prior to his entry into politics, he worked as a family doctor.

He is currently a TD for the constituency of Dublin Central. Fitzpatrick was first elected to Dáil Éireann in the 1987 General Election but lost his seat in the 1992 election. He regained a seat at the 2002 General Election.

While he has made no formal announcement of his decision to retire at the next election, he did not seek renomination as a Fianna Fáil candidate. At the party selection convention in February 2006, his daughter Mary Fitzpatrick, a Fianna Fáil member of Dublin City Council, was nominated as one of three prospective candidates in Dublin Central for the next election. (The other candidates are the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD and Senator Cyprian Brady.)
