Del Cerro, San Diego, California
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Del Cerro (Spanish for "of the hill") and colloquially known as "hanukkah hill" for its large jewish population, is a wealthy neighborhood in the eastern part of San Diego, California, USA and the Navajo community. It includes a few sub-communities such as the wealthy Del Cerro Heights, Princess Del Cerro and Old Del Cerro. It neighbors the communities of San Carlos, Allied Gardens, College Area, Grantville Lake Murray and the city of La Mesa. Over recent years the community has come to odds with the expansion of San Diego State University which is looking towards the affluent community for expansion.

Del Cerro Blvd. contains the communities only commerical areas including Windmill Farms, a foodmart (attached to the Chevron station), two liquor stores, and a Day Spa. Windmill Farms provides the majority of the community with healthy grocery choices and competes with near-by Albertsons in Allied Gardens.
Del Cerro was not begun as a development project like many other San Diego Communities. The blossoming neighborhood of La Jolla developed much discrimination for the Jewish population. The residents of La Jolla made it very difficult for Jews to own land and get substantial jobs. As a result, individual lots began to be purchased in Del Cerro in April of 1955. A wealthy Jewish community slowly formed. Today few original Jewish home owners still reside in their homes. Thus the community is losing it's stereotype as 'Hannukah Hill.' Many residents of Del Cerro enjoy lush views from the hill that extend as far as the Coronado Islands.
