Dayton Moore

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dayton Moore is the general manager of the Kansas City Royals. He succeeds Allard Baird.

A native of Wichita, Kansas, Moore grew up a Royals fan. He claims to have watched the 1985 World Series in Kansas City from I-70. He played baseball at Garden City Community College before graduating from George Mason University in 1989, with an undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Health. Dayton served as an assistant baseball coach at Mason from 1990 to 1994. In 1992 he received a master's degree in Athletic Administration from Mason. In 1994 he made the jump to Major League Baseball, joining the Atlanta Braves as a scout. He later served as an assistant director of scouting, assistant director of player development, and director of international scouting before his promotion in 2002 to director of player personnel development. He took over as Braves Assistant General Manager in August of 2005. In November 2005, Moore interviewed with the Boston Red Sox for their GM opening, but withdrew his name from consideration after the first interview.

One alleged sticking point in negotiations to lure Dayton Moore from Atlanta was complete control of personnel decisions. Dayton has said he did not get any guaranteed assurances in writing from owner David Glass. However, he assured fans he had the control to take the club in the direction necessary. "If I didn’t feel I could have total autonomy to put (the Royals) on the right track, I wouldn’t have been the general manager at Kansas City, Atlanta, New York or wherever,"1 he said.
